The model
Back in the heyday of the UK's railway network a structure like this would be found in every railway hub and on the outskirts of a large town or city. This structure was used to empty and dispose of the large amounts of coal ash produced by the steam locomotives. From a pit under the track the a winch would lift the shuttles of ash up the rails and over into the main hopper. Later the store of ash would be channeled into a waiting open wagon to be taken away.
